SYRINX leather goods were born from the concept of "mottainai," or not wanting to waste.
SYRINX originally started as an audio brand, developing leather speakers. Seeking materials suitable for acoustics, they encountered Italian vachetta leather. This leather, with its beautiful deepening color and luster over time, was truly a living material. However, speaker production generates a large amount of leather scraps.
"We don't want to waste the life we've been given." This sentiment led to the creation of leather items utilizing these scraps.
This "mottainai" philosophy, which began with not wanting to waste, still breathes through all of SYRINX's endeavors.
1 Charity Projects
SYRINX conducts donation activities for disaster-stricken areas and conflict zones as support through its products.
Hitoe® Fold Aria -Bouquet- - Support for Conflict Zones
For every purchase of "Hitoe® Fold Aria -Bouquet-", SYRINX will donate 3,000 JPY to the Japanese Red Cross Society for humanitarian aid in conflict zones around the world. We hope that "Bouquet" (a bouquet of flowers) embodies our wish for peace where diverse values coexist, just as various flowers are bundled together. Let's deliver hope to the world!
∞ Musubu® Key Case ∞ - Support for Areas Affected by Natural Disasters
On January 12, 2024, SYRINX launched the "∞ Musubu Charity Project ∞". All proceeds from the sale of the "Musubu® Key Case", which is a charity product, will be donated as relief funds to areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake in 2024. SYRINX has been supported and nurtured by the generous assistance of many people through crowdfunding and other initiatives. This project embodies the desire of all our employees to give back, even a little, towards the earliest possible recovery of the affected areas.
2 Mottainai Market
Aiming for a circular society with no waste, SYRINX offers products that cannot be sold as regular items due to unique leather qualities, discontinuation, or other reasons, through the "Mottainai Market".
This initiative is based on the "mottainai" principle, which is the origin of SYRINX's leather goods.
3 Anywhere Showroom
This initiative was started to effectively utilize samples used for shooting and interviews, returned products, and B-grade items with scratches that would otherwise be unusable. This service allows you to have a sample delivered to your home and try it out for several days.
4 Ultimate Scrap Utilization
This small, idea-packed key case was developed to effectively utilize scraps left over after cutting larger products, thereby reducing leather waste as much as possible. It is only produced when large scraps are generated, and because it uses otherwise discarded leather, it is offered at a very reasonable price.
5 Waste Reduction
The dummy card included with wallets is often discarded immediately after purchase. We have devised a way for this dummy card to be practically used as a multi-functional ruler instead of being thrown away.
6 Plastic-Free Packaging
Illegally discarded plastics are a serious cause of ocean pollution. Non-woven fabrics and OPP bags are often used in the packaging of leather products.
SYRINX minimizes the use of these plastics by replacing OPP bags with paper sleeves and non-woven fabrics with tissue paper. Achieving this requires the understanding of our customers. Please be aware that the outer box may show signs of dents or scuffs during storage and transportation.
7 Paperless Operations
Leather products typically come with a leather certification card and maintenance instructions.
However, SYRINX products generally do not include paper instructions. All necessary information is delivered directly via email. (In some cases, minimal instructions are included for particularly important points.)
This approach is not only environmentally friendly but also allows us to provide richer, easier-to-understand, and more timely information than paper can.
8 Recycling Paper
Hasamu® A4 was created to effectively utilize the back sides of copy paper that would otherwise be discarded in offices.
With waste paper, you can draw anything freely without worrying about making mistakes. The key to brainstorming ideas is to be able to draw without stress. Waste paper is one of the optimal choices for this.
9 SYRINX Donations
On the SYRINX brand website, there is an "Donation Amount" input field on the payment screen when purchasing products, and we conduct donation activities. All precious funds entrusted to us are fully donated to support Ukraine and victims of the Turkey-Syria earthquake.
This may be a steady activity. However, to move forward, we believe it is important to start and then continue. We intend to continue taking steps forward, one by one.
10 Protecting Hokkaido's Forests
This initiative utilizes Ezo deer leather from Hokkaido, promoted by the general incorporated association "more trees," formerly headed by the late musician Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Ezo deer, which inhabit all of Hokkaido, have a strong reproductive capacity and have increased to the point of destroying forest vegetation. Consequently, over 100,000 deer are culled annually in recent years. However, most of their hides are discarded due to shotgun pellet marks, difficulty in processing, and wild scars, with little effective utilization.
Having removed their natural predator, the wolf, for our own convenience, we have a responsibility not to waste the life of the "Ezo deer," a blessing of Hokkaido's rich nature, but to respect and value it to the very end. From this sentiment, the Ezo deer leather speaker "LOG" was born.
"LOG" has been recognized for its significance and received the "Social Products Award 2018 Special Prize".
"Mottainai" and "Itadakimasu"
Cow and pig leather are made from the hides of animals that have been processed for meat. Life is never taken solely for leather products. Furthermore, discarding hides places a significant burden on the environment. Leather embodies the spirit of "mottainai" and is an environmentally friendly recycled material.
In Japan, we have the wonderful phrase "itadakimasu." Being grateful for the life given and using it carefully is also our responsibility.
On the other hand, methane gas produced during cattle farming contributes to global warming. While countermeasures are advancing, the number of cattle raised may decrease with the spread of alternative meats. Recently, the potential of other materials alongside leather is also being researched.
SYRINX remains aware of trends surrounding leather products and will continue to be grateful for the lives given and cherish the use of leather for as long as meat culture persists.
Even in the act of using leather, there is thought and gratitude. This is the "form of thought" at SYRINX.
