[SDGs] Mottainai and Itadakimasu

SYRINX's leather goods business had an unconventional start, driven by the concept of "mottainai" (avoiding waste).
SYRINX, originally founded as an audio brand, featured speakers with soft leather bodies.
In search of suitable leather for audio, we encountered Vacchetta leather, known for its beautiful color and sheen that develop with aging. However, making speakers produced a large amount of leather scraps.
With the desire to "cherish and fully utilize the life given," the development of leather items using these scraps began.
This philosophy continues to be reflected in various initiatives today.

1. Showroom Anywhere

This initiative was started to make effective use of unused products such as samples used for filming and interviews, returned items, and B-grade items with flaws.
It is a service where we send samples to your home so you can actually use them for several days.
We started this service with the same desire to "cherish and fully utilize the life given."

2. Ultimate Scraps Utilization: "Musubu® Key Case"

This small key case, packed with ideas, was developed to effectively use scraps left over from cutting larger products like clutch bags, aiming to minimize leather waste.
While it is only produced when large scraps are generated, it is priced very reasonably as it utilizes leather that would otherwise be discarded.

3. Waste Reduction

Dummy cards included with wallets often become useless after purchase and are destined for disposal. These dummy cards are made practical as multi-functional rulers, preventing them from being thrown away.

4. Reducing Plastics in Packaging

Illegally discarded plastics are a serious cause of marine pollution. Non-woven fabrics and OPP bags are often used in the packaging of leather products. However, most of these are discarded after opening.
SYRINX is actively reducing the use of these plastics by switching OPP bags to paper sleeves and non-woven fabrics to tissue paper. Realizing this requires the understanding of our customers. Please understand that the outer box may show signs of dents or scratches during storage and transport.

5. Paperless Initiative

Leather maintenance methods and precautions applicable to all products are published on our website. Additionally, purchasers are individually informed via email as part of our paperless initiative. (In some cases, instruction manuals may be included for particularly important points.) Some products do not come with any instruction manual. Furthermore, we do not provide paper product catalogs or brochures. We appreciate your understanding.

"Mottainai" and "Itadakimasu"

Cows and pigs are not raised specifically for leather production. Hides are a byproduct of cattle processed for meat, and if not utilized as leather, they have no other option but to be discarded. In reality, a large amount of hide is still discarded, which has a high environmental impact, reportedly emitting five times more carbon dioxide than leather tanning.
Consuming meat entails discarding hides, an act that significantly impacts the environment.
Leather, therefore, is an environmentally friendly recycled material that embodies the spirit of "mottainai."
In Japan, we have the wonderful phrase "itadakimasu."
It is the responsibility of those who take life to appreciate and respectfully utilize the life given.

(For the same reason, we also sell "LOG" speakers made from Yezo deer leather, LOG.)

Leather and the Environment

Global warming caused by methane gas from cattle farming is a serious issue. While the development of feed to suppress methane emissions is progressing, the number of cattle may decrease with the spread of alternative meats. In the future, it will be necessary to research the possibilities of other materials in parallel with leather.
However, as long as humans raise cattle, SYRINX will continue to appreciate the life given and cherish the use of leather.
