SYRINX - A New Challenge

SYRINX is ahead of its time, proposing new possibilities for a sustainable future by fusing Japan's first mushroom-derived leather alternative material with traditional cowhide leather.

"KINOLI, a mushroom-derived leather alternative material" is a 100% natural material made from thinly layered mushroom mycelium. It contains no PVC (polyvinyl chloride) or PU (polyurethane), has a low environmental impact, and is a circular material that returns to nature.

The cowhide leather is "Vacchetta leather," vegetable-tanned leather that has been continuously handed down in the Tuscany region of Italy since the 14th century.

The combination of innovative mushroom-derived leather alternatives and traditional cowhide leather serves as a bridge to a sustainable future.

Animal Leather × Mushroom-derived Leather Alternative

Leather and Sustainability

Since the Paleolithic era, humankind has not only eaten hunted animals but also used their bones for tools and their hides for clothing, thus supporting their survival. Transforming perishable animal hides into durable leather was a wisdom for surviving harsh environments and one of the oldest sustainable inventions.

Even today, effectively utilizing the large quantities of hides that are by-products of the meat industry is essential for balancing meat consumption with the preservation of the global environment.

Leather Alternatives and Sustainability

On the other hand, livestock farming consumes vast amounts of water, and methane emissions from cattle are one of the main causes of global warming. To address this issue, the development of plant-based meat alternatives is progressing, and in the future, the number of cattle raised will likely decrease, necessitating alternative materials for leather.

Against this backdrop, plant-based leather alternatives with low environmental impact are attracting attention.

Among these, KINOLI is an ideal circular material made 100% from mycelium.

Towards Sustainable Synergy

Both animal-derived leather and plant-derived leather alternatives are sustainable. And in a future where leather production decreases, plant-derived leather alternatives are expected to take its place. Leather and plant-derived leather alternatives are not opposing entities but partners that complement each other for a sustainable future.

Experience the "Hitoe® Fold Aria -Mushroom-", which maximizes the synergy of these two materials through minimalist functional beauty and meticulous Japanese craftsmanship.
